On Federer Losing

Great champions in any sport come once in a generation and Federer's greatness can only be measured when the enormity of the fact that the first grand slam final in two and a half years will be played without his presence has sunk in. What Federer has achieved is magnanimous and if ever records are written or re-written in tennis hence, this record of 10 consecutive grand slam appearances would still stand tall. The upto now infallible Federer showed his human side in the second week of the grand slam down under after two and a half years of exceptional dominance. It would be almost unreal not to see him take up one side of the court in a major final. So what if the great champion was done in by a player who was perhaps playing the best tennis of his life. Federer was having the worst 2nd week in a grand slam for as far as I can remember. It was kind of expected that he would lose and Djokovic was the best player who could pull this off. Djokovic still had to play at his very best to beat Federer and anything less than that would still have seen Federer through. This means that there is still a great difference between Federer and the rest of the guys on tour. Its great for tennis to see two new faces in a grand slam final. This might still be the beginning of the Federer-Djokovic rivalry. As all champions, rest assured that Federer will come back roaring setting up a very interesting year in men's tennis.
